WALKING WITH GOD - Reflecting on the Psalms
September 10/12
- PSALM 19: ‘SEEING HIS GLORY’
The psalms depict the spiritual life of God’s people – all the ups and downs, joys
and struggles of human beings intent on ‘walking with God’. Today’s psalm is full
of the glory and goodness of the Lord whom David walks with and worships.
Please also read Psalm 8.
[Other passages that might help you during the study are: Isaiah 40.25-31, Romans
1.20(18-23), Acts 17.24-25, Rev 4.11 (1-11)]
- 19. 1-6: WALKING WITH HIS CREATOR
- THE GLORIES OF GOD’S WORLD
David is thrilled by the daily shouting of a silent song of praise of God’s glory.
- Put in your own words the message of creation’s silent song. What thrills you about
these verses?
- in what ways is the revelation of God’s glory contained in creation truly ‘universal’?
- How are you, personally, affected by what you see in creation?
- How does Psalm 8 (3-8) imply that we men and women are humbled when we consider the
awesome greatness of creation and consider his love for us?
(Additional questions, if time allows:
What message does Isaiah (40.25-31) draw for us from God’s intimate knowledge of
the innumerable stars of heaven?
- What are the important implications for men and women of the fact that God’s existence
and greatness and glory are displayed in creation?
Why not pause here, possibly sing a song like ‘How great thou art’, and praise the
glory of the creator?
- 19.7-11: WALKING IN THE WAY OF HIS WORD
- THE GOODNESS OF GOD’S WORD
- What does David have to say in these verses about the goodness of God’s word?
- What precious benefits and blessings does it bring the one who loves it? (Please
explain in practical everyday terms what these are.)
- How does he express its value and delight to him? (Do you share his experience?
- What about you? How does God’s word affect your daily life?
- How does it help you? When has it blessed you?
How often do you read and meditate on it?
Why not pause to praise God for his word and what it has meant and does mean to you?
Pray for its spread…etc.
- 19.12-14: WALKING IN WORSHIP
- HIS GREATNESS TO HIS WORSHIPPER
From talking about the Lord, his glory and goodness, the Psalmist turns to talking
to Him, to end his song. This is his personal response to the great God.
- How would you describe David’s response to these, things, as he expresses it in verses
12-14?
- What effect have the considerations had on his soul?
- What is he moved to? What is he made conscious of? For what does he pray?
