GROUP FELLOWSHIP NOTES: SPRING 2006 FEB 7/9th
‘THE SPREADING FLAME’: ACTS 8-28
(2) ACTS 10: ‘CHRIST AND THE GENTILES’
The flame spreads to the non-Jewish world. The Samaritans who had just welcomed the
gospel, were of mixed (Jewish and Gentile) ancestry. But now the GATE-WAY TO THE
GENTILES IS OPENED FOR THE FIRST TIME BY THE LORD THROUGH PETER. An exciting passage,
especially for us ‘Gentiles’!
THE LORD USES PETER, THE PREJUDICED: 10. 1-48
- WHAT THE LORD DID FOR CORNELIUS: 10. 1-8
- an unusually devout Gentile!
The man Cornelius was. Talk about Cornelius. What do we learn about him? What picture
do we get of the sort of man he was? - The message Cornelius received. What assurance did he receive? What directions
was he given? What impact do you think this had on Cornelius?
- What does it tell us about our God?
- WHAT THE LORD DID IN PETER: 10. 9-20
- A very devout Jew!
The vision Peter saw: (10-16) What was its context? That is, how and when did it
come to Peter? - What was its content?
- What was Peter’s confusion?
- Can you understand the degree of Peter’s struggle?
-
- The voices Peter heard: (17-20) What voices were heard at the gate?
- What voice heard in his heart?
- What do you think about the Lord’s ‘timing’?
-
- The victory Peter won: 23-47
- over his prejudice
Consider these verses carefully and try to find seven actions of Peter that demonstrate
the great victory the Lord worked in Peter in overcoming his blind prejudice. - WHAT THE LORD DID WITHOUT PETER: (44-48)
- A group of devout people, amazed!
What important action did the Lord take without any human mediation? why was this
so important and significant? - How did Peter respond to this? what does this tell you?
If you have time, it is worthwhile considering one further thing:
- WHAT THE LORD SPOKE THROUGH PETER: (34-43)
- a very committed disciple’s preaching
What does Peter have to say about the principle on which God works? (34-35) - What does he have to say about the Person through whom God saves? (36 -43)
Remember: This is the message God honours and responds to by sending the Holy Spirit
in power.
