CELL GUIDE No 1 – AUTUMN 2002
WELCOME
Foot Tapping Game
Get two volunteers into the middle of a circle. They lock hands with each other, and the aim of the game is to tap the top of one of their opponents feet with their foot. Once one of the opponents has been "tapped" three times, they sit down and the winner challenges someone else from the circle. Leaders join in.

WORSHIP

Look/Read at Isaiah 42:1-4 (printed below)

“Look at my servant, whom I strengthen.
He is my chosen one, and I am pleased with him.
I have put my Spirit upon him.
He will reveal justice to the nations.
He will be gentle—he will not shout or raise his voice in public.
He will not crush those who are weak or quench the smallest hope.
He will bring full justice to all who have been wronged.
He will not stop until truth and righteousness prevail throughout the earth.
Even distant lands beyond the sea will wait for his instruction.”

Take each phrase and write out on a piece of paper all the words and phrases which describe Jesus’ character. Once you’ve got all of them, write out what each of them means in the group’s words.
WORD
(This week we start a series looking at Jesus in Mark’s gospel.)

Mark 1:9-15

9 One day Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee, and he was baptized by John in the Jordan River. 10 And when Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens split open and the Holy Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11 And a voice came from heaven saying, “You are my beloved Son, and I am fully pleased with you.”
12 Immediately the Holy Spirit compelled Jesus to go into the wilderness. 13 He was there for forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was out among the wild animals, and angels took care of him.
14 Later on, after John was arrested by Herod Antipas, Jesus went to Galilee to preach God’s Good News. 15 “At last the time has come!” he announced. “The Kingdom of God is near! Turn from your sins and believe this Good News!”

Where is your kingdom?
(Your kingdom is anywhere where you have the rule and authority… so it may be your school locker, your bedroom…)

What other kingdoms can you think of?
(people or places)

Why would Jesus say the kingdom of God is near?
(time – he was beginning his ministry, location – he was the one it was coming through and he was there! He was not thinking of a physical place – although his hearers may have thought of Israel or Jerusalem)

How was this the right time?
It was God’s timing – he had chosen when to send Jesus, when to begin his ministry)

Is it still the right time? How can anyone be part of God’s kingdom?
By giving rule and authority to God

What is more difficult: to turn from sins? Or to believe? Why?

WITNESS

Pray for one another – either for belief or turning from sin or both!
