CELL GUIDE No 2 – Winter 2003 – In need of a shepherd…
WELCOME
Chill with a drink!
Game variation number 2 – following complaints from the boys – variation 1 had hands on knees – why not try this….
Everybody lays down in a circle with their hands in front of them. They can be on their elbows. Everybody puts their right arm over the person's next to them. That makes it so that everybody has 2 hands in between their own. A person is chosen to start. That person slaps their hand on the ground once, then the person to their right does the same thing. If they want to, they can slap their hand twice, causing the direction to reverse. It can get pretty confusing. If a person slaps their hand down when it's not their turn, that hand is out.
Variation no. 3 would be everyone sitting around a table!
WORSHIP
On a big bit of paper – or series of small bits – get the group to draw sheep! Then in each one write things that make us like sheep! (perhaps have a good worship CD playing!)
Try and get some sensible ones (need regular feeding, need to be protected, easily follow the crowd, don’t like all our hair falling off!)
Why is Jesus the good shepherd – write some answers around the drawings of sheep
Have a few moments of reflection and silent praise
WORD
Jesus has just heard from the disciples all their adventures after he had sent them out on their first mission. They had seen great things, done great things and taught loads of people – and we pick up the story in Mark 6:31-34
31Crowds of people were coming and going so that Jesus and his followers did not even have time to eat. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves, and we will go to a lonely place to get some rest.”
32So they went in a boat by themselves to a lonely place. 33But many people saw them leave and recognized them. So from all the towns they ran to the place where Jesus was going, and they got there before him. 34When he arrived, he saw a great crowd waiting. He felt sorry for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began to teach them many things.
What would sheep without a shepherd be like? What dangers would they face, what would they be lacking?
How did Jesus become a shepherd to these people (Mark 6:34-44) (taught & fed – spiritual & physical food)
God wants to be our shepherd… look at Eze 34:11-16 – next sheet – and look through the different ways God cares, like a shepherd.
Ask: what does this say about God, how can I respond…
WITNESS
Each person thinks of two people that need to be found by the good shepherd – and speaks them out within a general prayer
Eze 34:11-16
This is what the Lord GOD says: I, myself, will search for my sheep.
As a shepherd takes care of his scattered flock when it is found, I will take care of my sheep.
I will save them from all the places where they were scattered on a cloudy and dark day…
I will feed them in a good pasture, and they will eat grass on the high mountains of Israel.
They will lie down on good ground where they eat grass, and they will eat in rich grassland on the mountains of Israel.
I will feed my flock and lead them to rest, says the Lord GOD.
I will search for the lost, bring back those that strayed away, put bandages on those that were hurt, and make the weak strong.
