Jesus said, “I am the Alpha and the Omega,
the First and the Last,
the Beginning and the End.”
Rev 22.13
CELL GUIDE – Summer 2004 – No 4 – Drink!

Welcome
2 activities today…
1) Name the 3 main UK soaps and their pubs… think of some story lines that have taken place in these places, where else could they have set them, if you take the pub out of the equation? Be imaginative!
2) Hand out the sheet: “Name that drinker…” Who drinks what… eg old ladies, hooligans, vicars etc.
Worship
Read Psalm 25:7 “Look at me through the eyes of your unfailing love”
Be thankful
Word
Different people read out the following verses that look at the dangers of drinking….!
Genesis 9:21 – Noah
Genesis 19:32-33 – Lot
1 Samuel 1:14 – Samuel
Take a look at proverbs…
 Proverbs 20:1, 23:30-32, 31:4
What is God saying….?
Ephesians 5:18 perhaps sums it up very well!
However also think of other passages….
John 2:1-11
John 15:1-2 – more fruit on a vine…. “I am the pub, you are the regulars!”
Paul’s amazingly modern advice to Tim 1 Tim 5:23
The issue with wine… or any mind enhancing thing is that too much of is not good! Abusing drink is not a good thing.
What are the main reasons why it’s not good for people to drink to excess? (health, weight, money, relationships, violence)
Why also does God want Christians to refrain from drinking to excess? (Self control, right judgement, witness to others)
Paul didn’t have a problem with (moderate) drinking unless it was a problem for someone else… see Romans 14:21. How can we take Paul’s advice to heart? How can we support one another in a world where the expectation is often that you will drink…
Why not consider abstaining completely…?
Witness
Pray for one another that life can be enjoyed to maximum – without the need for drinking to excess (or at all).
