CELL GUIDE – Summer 2004 – No 2 – Boyfs & Girlfs!

Welcome
Relationship auction
Get the group to come up with a list of qualities you need in a relationship / want from a boy/girlfriend…. (ignore ‘love’ – not because it is not important – but because perhaps it is the word we are trying to describe! i.e too general). Write them all on a big bit of paper
See how many the group can come up with – but be ready with some to add in.
e.g. trust, faithfulness, romance, good looks, money, sense of humour, communication, understanding, forgiving, respect,
‘Give’ every person £250 and tell them they are going to auction all the relationship attributes. (Tip: make sure a less important one is first – so everyone gets into swing of it… often big bids don’t come until later!)
At end of auction – any money you have left over gets given back to bank! You can’t keep it for the honeymoon. Make sure people don’t overspend. (If it seems everyone has spent too much too early then you could give everyone an extra £100)
As you auction off each ‘lot’ – write the amount paid for the lot on the piece of paper along with the name of who bought it.
Once all lots have been bought – take a look at what each person has bought. Some people normally go for one thing – others try and get every bargain going!
The main thing is to see – what went for most money… perhaps look at the top 5.
Are there any other attributes that should be in top 5?
Worship
Read parts of Psalm 145 – while a worship track is playing. Encourage people to speak out words of praise
Word
Read 2 Cor 6:14-18
Did anyone have – ‘same faith’ as an important thing to bid on? (Or Similar worldview)
How important is it? Where would it come in your list?
Why?
Why does Paul warn Corinthians of this?
It has been said: “Never go out with someone who, (if things kept developing, at some time in the future,) you couldn’t marry”  (nb this is not saying only got out with people you think you will marry!)
Do you agree?
If so…  why?
If not… what is the reason to go out with someone you know you could never marry?
Go back to the auction – these characteristics are all ones that God wants to develop in us. Take a look at the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22) – if these grow in our lives – everyone will want to go out with us!!!
Witness
Pray for each other – that we go out with people for right reasons
