EDGE 6 – Autumn 2005
He’ll be back!
Welcome
Play a game of Frustration – can be played in pairs if more than 4 people or with more than one game going on. Play as normal except this one addition…
Whenever someone throws a 6 and moves one of their pieces out, they have to state what they hope that piece will achieve and what they expect it to achieve. Note then what it does actually achieve.
Word 1
What is the difference between hope, expectation and reality?
Christians hope for the return of Jesus – how does this fit in?
What do you know about Jesus’ return? Write/Draw it all down
Worship
Praise Jesus for the amazing elements of his life… perhaps go round the group with each of these… his birth, his baptism, his death, his resurrection, his going up to heaven, his coming back from heaven
Word 2
Two issues seemed to be bothering the Thessies:
Oh no some of our friends have died before Jesus’ return… where are they now? What will happen to them when Jesus returns?
When will all this happen? And will us who are still alive be ok?
Read 1 Thess 4:13-18 (Older, maturer groups read on into chapter 5)
Why did Paul write these words? (v13)
Discuss the difference between sadness of death with and without hope.
What’s the basis for the hope? (v14)
What’s going to happen? (v16,17)
Discuss people’s ideas, from this passage or others
Discuss how we don’t know exactly the details.
Tony Campolo once said “I’m not on the organising committee, I’m on the welcoming committee” Take a look at 5:8,9 to see how we can be on that welcoming committee.
When’s it going to happen?
No-one knows – and don’t try to work it out!
But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t always be ready? How can we remain awake? 5:6
Go back to the first question…
Why did Paul write these words… 4:18, 5:11
Witness
