EDGE 4 – Summer 2005
True Greatness
Welcome
Play Equipment required
Slips of paper with the following written on them:
SAS men storming a building
Self-service in a supermarket
Tennis stars practising their service
A butler serving drinks to M'Lord
Dinner ladies serving lunch
To play
Allocate the slips around the group. They can share slips as necessary but they should not let any of the others know what is on their slip. They must take it in turns to act out what was on their slip. The others must guess what they were doing. When all the slips have been guessed, ask the group what was the common denominator. The word 'service' should (might) emerge.
Worship
Make a list of all the ways Jesus is great… (write them down / draw them) then once you have a ‘good list’ read the following familiar words.
Phil 2:6Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his rights as God. 7He made himself nothing; he took the humble position of a slave and appeared in human form. 8And in human form he obediently humbled himself even further by dying a criminal’s death on a cross.
Perhaps some could make this idea into a poem or song… Rob Lacey has done it in his street bible:
He was God, right through to the marrow,
But he didn't use his clout to put himself about heaven.
He took off all the royal bits, cut up his heavenly credit cards,
Chucked his global contacts list, walked off without his bodyguards.
He unplugged his airwave connection, left his precious star collection,
He gave it all up. (x 2)
And took up a new role - a role well below him:
He became flesh and blood, skin and bone,
And stepped down from his heavenly throne to his new earth-home as a normal guy.
And more - he allowed himself to die;
And more - he allowed himself to be nailed up high and executed on a cross.
Word
Read Mark 10:35-45
Why did the sons of Zebedee want to sit alongside Jesus?
Do we seek recognition? How?
Why do we like being the important person? The number 1?
How does Jesus say we should be? Not seeking recognition but…?
What does serving one another mean almost 2000 years after Jesus spoke these words?
How does serving make you great?
Read John 1:19-27
What is John’s attitude?
Why is thinking you are ‘not even worthy to untie his sandals’ a good place to begin when we think about serving?
What was the purpose of John’s serving?
What about us… why should we do it?
(Helps others, shows our thankfulness to Jesus, AND gives Jesus the recognition – and then he will make the last come first…!)
Witness
Pray for one another – to have the same attitude as Jesus… (Philippians 2:4)
