EDGE 1 – Spring 2006
On a Journey
Welcome
Each person thinks of someone who they consider to be the greatest. (No-one can use God!) e.g. Rooney, Shayne, Bob Geldolf, CS Lewis etc
Have a debate about who would be the greatest. As soon as someone is convinced that another player’s person is greater than theirs, they join in with that team – become part of their empire! Keep playing until one person is shown to be the greatest.
Worship
Thank God that he is great – he made the universe
Thank Jesus that he is great – he came to serve.
“Do you want to stand out? Then step down. Be a servant” Matt 23:11
Word
This term we are looking at Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem and to that amazing first Easter.
Take a look at Luke 9:51 – Jesus sets his face towards Jerusalem… it is good to note that Jesus was being completely obedient to the plan His Father had.
Read Luke 9: 46-62 (- the bits around Luke 9:51)
[Some people compare this journey of Jesus to the Exodus of Moses and the Jewish people. Do you see similarities or differences?]
This passage makes it clear that a journey is not easy…
Setting off right.
v46-48 The disciples have a little argument about who is greatest. Is this a danger for us… that we publicly or secretly compete against others. (E.g. My work is better than yours, our youth group is better, my holiday was better…)
v49-50 Perhaps the issue may be more about pride and “all about me” or us. How might this attitude crop up in the Christian life?
Setting off
v51 Do you have a clear plan of where you are going? No – thought so… but what about in the Christian faith, where is God leading you. Do you have a goal to do with prayer or holiness or use of a particular gift… or is more general like ‘being faithful’
v52-56 When you know your goal it is easier to make decisions… Jesus knew he was going to Jerusalem, to set up a kingdom based on love. So… why would he want the Samaritan village burnt down? Has keeping your mind fixed on the goal God wants for you helped you make decisions?
Journeying
In what ways is the Christian life like a journey?
Tell each other parts of your journeys. The crossroads, the people you journeyed with etc.
If you have space – challenge people to walk in a straight line whilst looking back over their shoulder. (Some may be able to walk fairly straight – but almost certainly they won’t be as fast as if they were looking forward.)
What are the dangers of looking back?
How might we be tempted to look back?
Witness
Pray for one another to follow Jesus wherever he leads.
