EDGE Spring 2007 - Ecclesiastes – Session 3
Welcome
Spend longer doing something together. Eating a bit more, drinking, playing a game, chatting. Perhaps ask a question like “what is your favourite game?”
Perhaps also show the group the picture below with the instruction “discuss”
Worship
Thank God for each other, and for his amazing love that loves everyone! Anyone could look at the snake lifted up and be healed… anyone can look at Jesus and be set free.
Word
“The world is evil” – discuss.
Read Ecclesiastes 4:1-3
Why does the writer think it would be better not to be born?
As people who have been born – what can we do?
“The world is motivated by…” – discuss
Read Ecclesiastes 4:4-8 and 13-16
What different things does the writer identify (envy, work {nb the sadness of v8} and power)
How can we avoid the futility of chasing the wind?
Compare verse 6 in different translations:
NCV “I say it is better to be content with what little you have. Otherwise, you will always be struggling for more, and that is like chasing the wind.”
NLT “Better to have one handful with quietness than two handfuls with hard work and chasing the wind.”
Message: “One handful of peaceful repose is better than two fistfuls of worried work. More spitting into the wind.”
Quietness, contentment, peaceful repose – how many handfuls do you take?
